National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets

Treasure seeker Ben Gates is back after his family’s honour is put into question by a rival, who offers alleged proof that Gates’ ancestor, was not a Civil War-era hero, but an Abraham Lincoln assassination participant. Ben gets the help of his father, side kick, and estranged girlfriend to puzzle trot all over, which leads them all over the world, and to the eventual conclusion that Ben must kidnap the President of the United States.
Following a great looking opening sequence, Book of Secrets goes back to the mediocre style of the first movie. None of the characters learned anything from the first National Treasure movie. It seems that everybody is in similar predicaments as before, only this time a few cogs are thrown in to give Book of Secrets that great sequel appeal. Sadly all of this seems like one big cliche. Ben and his girlfriend are in a lovers spat, his sidekick doesnt pay his taxes, and the Gates'family name is ran through the mud. Awesome! Let the adventure begin.
The truth is that National Treasure did not ever need a sequel in the first place. It was a very entertaining Saturday matinie adventure movie. Ben Gates is no Indiana Jones, or Captian Jack. National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets is exactly what I knew it was going to be,a sequel that upped the ante on very basic entertainment level puzzles and car chases. National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets gets a D+. Enjoy? ~Caleb

Indiana Jones in the Fifties

I am going to start this review off by answering the question a lot of you will want to know, where does Crystal Skull rank? For a long time now I have placed Radiers of the Lost Ark as a separate masterpiece from the rest of the series. The 11 year old kid in me ranks Temple of Doom as the best, leaving The Last Crusade as the perfect ending to the series. Doom still has that special place in my heart, Crusade still has that perfect ending, but Crystal Skull is my second fave. 1,4,2,3 is the order for me.
After 19 years since Last Crusade, Spielberg and Lucas can still make an amazing Indiana Jones film. Everything I love about this series is still strong as ever in Crystal Skull. I really enjoy this latest installment and think it's better than just o.k.
In this latest adventure we see an older Indy adjusting to life in the 50's. So long Holy Crusades, hello nuclear age. A young James Dean type seeks the aid of Dr. Jones to help find his mother and old friend, who was a colleague of Indiana. An ancient artifact called the Crystal Skull(s) ties everything together in the fourth film of the classic series. This review is so late that its not even funny. I promise a more in depth review when the DVD comes out. My final word or words is this. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is just equally good and fun as other films in the series. A+. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

The Terminator!

Watched this at The Palace at Midnight. What can I say but........AWE-SOME!
COX and I agreed that neither of us had the opportunity to ever see this in the theater.
We both grew up watching this over and over. It is an absolute classic of 1984,
and I give The Palace 2 thumbs up for choosing this film to show as part of their "Midnight Madness" features.

It was everything that I remember and more. I love the gritty feel. I love the lower budget. It has a "real" feel to it. It is not high-end special effects.....it doesn't require that. I wish that more movies of today were made in this fashion, and not worry so much about the bright lights, big name actors, huge CGI special effects, and big budgets. Make some quality stuff like this. If Hollywood wont do it, then maybe old COX and I need to step up to the plate and offer something that audiences (like us) will love and respect.

Part of why I like to view these older films on the big screen like this is the fact that the film is aged and has been played numerous times. This causes the film to have imperfections, scratches, bad cuts, poorer sound quality. You would think that most people would HATE this............for COX and I it is completely the opposite. We cherish these things. They make the movie that much better. It adds a certain feel to it that you cant get at home watching a Digital DVD.

Schwarzenegger is huge and in his prime. Biehn is tough and this is his signature role. Hamilton does a fantastic job. It will probably be a while before this is ever played anywhere else on the big screen anytime soon, but if it does, and you like this kind of stuff, you don't want to miss it. It was one of the best movie experiences I have had in a while.

Expelled ~ Now Playing @ Campbell 16

I would love to see this but don't know if it's really something I would want to see @ a theater. The good thing is that it's getting the message out. USA Today has already called it propaganda. Funny. Support the truth. Enjoy! ~Caleb

Catchaflick Rewind - Juno

Juno is a very funny touching tale about Juno McGuff who after a night with her best friend/boyfriend gets pregnant. At first she decides to abort the baby, but cold feet persuades her to give her child up for adoption. She finds the perfect couple to give the baby to. This is the basic set up of the film, the rest is a 9 month heartfelt, funny, and witty look at Juno's life during this special time. If I tell you any more you will hate me for giving away your favorite part that you will love experiencing on your own.

Written by Diablo Cody a former stripper, has given us one of the smartest teen movies in a long time. Cody could be the new voice of celluloid. The dialogue is party mix of teenage speak and erudite vocabulary. It's the sort of dialogue that seems real, but then you realize how clever it is and that people actually don't talk that way. I really love that. Great scripts sometimes brings great performances. It brings me great honor to say Cody's script was heard. Director Jason Reitman(Thank You For Smoking) is quickly making a name for himself with only 2 movies now under his belt. Hollywood had taken notice of Reitman and Cody, I only hope that moviegoers do the same. Juno is now on DVD. A+

Walk Hard : The Dewey Cox Story

Walk Hard is a smart comedy parody of the rock star biopic. The formula is near perfect. The humor in Walk Hard is very observational, self-parodying, ironic, surreal, dark and often hysterical.
The filmmakers Judd Apatow (Knocked Up) and Jake Kasden (Orange County) bring comedic genius to the movie. John C. Reilly is fantastic! I have been a fan of his work ever since I saw him for the first time in Boogie Nights. His role as Dewey Cox establishes himself as a solid leading man. It was also cool that he actually sang and played all of the music in the movie. Jenna Fischer and a wide range of current and former SNL stars, such as Kristin Wiig and Chris Parnell flesh out the rest of the cast for Walk Hard.
The up-and-down-and-up-again story of musician Dewey Cox, whose songs would change a nation. On his rock 'n roll spiral, Cox sleeps with 411 women, marries three times, has 22 kids and 14 step-kids, stars in his own 70s TV show, collects friends ranging from Elvis to the Beatles to a chimp, and gets addicted to - and then kicks - every drug known to man; but despite it all, Cox grows into a national icon and eventually earns the love of a good woman - longtime backup singer Darlene.
In addition to rips on bio movies like Ray and Walk the Line, Walk Hard has its own brand of humor and jokes that stand on their own. I will give a warning, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is silly, but it's all in good fun. Based on Reilly's performance and the songs I give Walk Hard a B+. Enjoy!!! ~Caleb

April Fools Day (2008)

Normally when it comes to direct to video horror I stay far away. It wasn’t until reading an interview about the remake; I started to think about giving the movie a shot. In the wake of Hollywood horror remake trends, I was surprised that a movie like this skipped the theater. After watching the movie I wasn't that surprised anymore. The new "April Fool's" revolves around a party given by two rich siblings for their friend. Tragedy strikes when a friend falls over a balcony and dies. One year later, the teens responsible for the accident become the targets of a twisted killer who begins hunting them down one by one. No way around it, April Fools Day is just bad. Unfortunately it wasn't a so bad it's good movie. The story was something that would have been somewhat interesting if the movie was made somewhere between I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 3. The acting in the movie was so lazy. I am sure you could find better acting from shows like The Hills. The one thing I did like in April Fools Day was the decent production design. I should have known better. Looks like the joke is on me. April Fools Day gets an F. Avoid! ~Caleb

Drillbit Taylor

It is always a good feeling when a movie is better than how you thought it was going to be. I do not feel ripped off seeing Drillbit Taylor on the big screen, but the movie is only worth a rental or bargin bin purchase.
Drillbit is a good high school teen genre comedy. This genre has and always will be one of my faves. The film is about two freshmen geeks starting the high school experience with a clean slate. Sorry boys, once a geek always a geek. Fed up with the bullies, our freshman friends seek the help of homeless bodyguard Drillbit Taylor. Once Owen Wilson who plays Drillbit gets the job, the wackeness ensues. The comedy in the movie is well paced, Owen does what he does best. The rest of the film seems like a light hearted Superbad, which to me is not a bad thing. I give Drillbit Taylor a C-
Enjoy! ~Caleb

TOP GUN

Watched Top Gun @ The Palace tonight @ 12 Midnight.

I thought I was prepared to watch this one again (as I have probably seen it at least 50 times), but I wasnt. It just seems to get better and better for me each time I watch it.

This film is awesome! I love the fact that I was able to see this in the theater again.
I love the fact that the film looks aged & was even a little scratched here and there. It just looks gritty (not polished), because its just old now. Its hard to believe that this movie came out in 1986. Its flippin 22 years old. and the cool thing is that the story, or wardrobe, or characters, etc havent really aged much. It still is cool in 2008!

No digital here folks, just plain great ole film. and what about that soundtrack?, holy schnikees!

I love Top Gun! Show me your love here with some of your own comments:
- Favorite lines?
- Favorite characters?
- Favorite scenes?
Let me have it cause "I feel the need......
